Take a moment to look at the chart and think about which stage you’re on. I doubt you’re on Precontemplative because you wouldn’t be here if you were. The chances are you’re somewhere between stages 2 or 4.
It is a fluid model because change isn’t linear, and your stage can slide back and forth at any moment.
Acknowledging your position on the chart at any given time can be helpful. Why?
Because change requires experimenting with new, sometimes unfamiliar approaches, and some will work better than others. And if a particular method doesn’t gel, we need to dust ourselves down, pick ourselves up and try something different.
In other words, if we are concerned that something isn’t working, we shouldn’t be afraid to revisit elements in the previous stages. For example, if we are in the Maintenance phase but have a troublesome event in the diary. We can review aspects of stage 4, Action, or stage 3, Preparing, to reset and strengthen resolve.
