Personifying the voice

F**k you, I wont do what you tell me

Many AFers find that giving the intrusive thoughts of temptation they experience a name helps them to address it. For example, a ‘wine witch’ or a ‘drink demon’. Personifying these intrusive thoughts re-frames them as a voice of a nemesis, as a battle to win or a hurdle to overcome and allows the opportunity to answer back, counteract and defeat it.

As someone who finds head-turning, controversial, dramatic and over-the-top things rather amusing, I went all out and called mine ‘Satan’. At first, I thought this suggested strategy was a little odd, but I bought in when I found myself theatrically shouting, ‘Get behind me, Satan, as my partner poured herself a G&T on a Friday night! 🙂 It was both mood-lifting and empowering!

Worth a try, right?
