Alcohol is chemically addictive

People can indeed become physically dependent on alcohol over time. Still, most people who find it difficult to control their drinking have yet to become physically dependent. Sure, once someone has created reliances and built tolerances, they become sensitive to the effect of alcohol withdrawal – manifesting as needing a drink. But this is not the same as physical dependency

So when it’s not yet a physical addiction in people, it stands to reason the urge to drink must be psychological. And we know this is possible because many other addictions do not involve imbibing a substance, such as gambling, social media and sex addiction.  Therefore, it must be the mental links and associations we’ve made between alcohol and joy or support driving our addiction at this stage.
