I’ve mentioned how motivations change and evolve along our journeys to controlling our drinking. Particularly as the early wins start to roll in. For example:
- that glorious moment when we wake up remembering we didn’t drink the previous day
- the first full night’s anxiety-free sleep
- the feeling of pride when we tick off another event as AFAlcohol-free More
- the improving clarity of thought; etc
These accumulating truly joyous moments are powerful drivers in our quest to change, and we look forward to repeating them as soon as possible. Yes, like drinking, the feeling that comes from sobriety can seem addictive. So ‘bottle that feeling’ in your mind or write it down, perhaps in your journal, and hold it for those moments when you need to dig a little deeper.
