You may have already heard of SMART. It’s a methodology used in workplace and counselling services settings to help employees or clients set focused, measurable, achievable goals. It stands for:
- Specific – is the goal focused, uncomplicated and single-mindedTo only do things that relate to one activity, goal or interest. To be simple and focussed on one’s approach. More to allow for effective planning?
- Measurable – is it possible to measure progress?
- Achievable – is it achievable at this time and within a reasonable timeframe? Is it the next natural, sequential step, i.e. there shouldn’t be any other steps between the present and the end goal?
- Relevant – is it related to the bigger picture or longer-term objectives?
- Time-bound – does it have a reasonable completion date that is neither too near to make success realistic nor so far off that one could lose focus?
Take a moment to record your goals below. Or make a note of them offline if you prefer. It could be in your journal or a note on your phone; wherever you decide, try to choose somewhere within easy reach.
