All emotions offer us something, even those we consider harmful or uncomfortable. So don’t be afraid to look under the bed. Try dragging one thing out at a time, and rather than labelling them as either good or bad, try approaching them by size. Initially, dealing with a small one may build confidence, but handling a larger one will make anything feel achievable, so consider the best strategy.
Name the emotion and acknowledge how each one makes you feel, and next time someone asks you how things are going, don’t casually say ‘fine’ unless they really are. Use the opportunity to articulate your feelings.
The good news is that feelings will change. Sometimes the emotion is so strong we cry, but we’ll always stop. Even the biggest emotions run their course.
And don’t feel you have to act on your emotions immediately; pause first, particularly if your feeling is anger. Sitting for a while and seeing the emotion for what it is takes bravery. Start with a deep breath and exhale slowly.
